JERRI
We could laugh about the mess now, but back then, when I didn’t know if I’d ever see the light of day again, it was no laughing matter.
I knew he’d tell the law exactly where to find me, and he did. It wasn’t that I tried to kill them, but the audacity! He had no shame, and neither did she. I needed them to pay for what they had done to me, to our marriage. It might not have prevented another affair, but I felt good and vindicated as I walked away and felt the heat of the flames burning behind me.
“What time you gotta be home?” Natasha asked.
Her question pulled me away from thoughts of the past drama with Jason.
“I wanna get there before nine,” I told her.
“Hmm. Okay.” She twisted her mouth.
“Why you ask?”
“Was thinking that maybe we could go someplace else when we done eating,” she said.
“Dang, girl, you know I really want to, but seriously, on my first night out?” I rolled my eyes dramatically. “I don’t wanna take any chances. The ol’ hag is probably gonna get a turn-by-turn, detailed report of every place I’ve visited as it is,” I said.
“Yeah, that’s a good point. Umph,” Vanessa grunted. She pursed her lips and frowned a little. “I’ll be glad when you get your freedom back. This hanging close to home and checking in before every move is so not the look,” she said.
She looked away.
“Hot at two o’clock,” Vanessa muttered.
Natasha’s head and mine turned in the same direction, at the same time, to take in the vision.
We were silent as we watched the good-looking man walk by. His swagger was undeniably sexy. He had an athlete’s build, broad shoulders that had muscles discreetly protruding near his neck, but he wasn’t so buffed that he grossed you out. His angular face had a perfectly lined goatee that darkened his features. He looked good. When we had taken in his handsome face and near-perfect body parts, we returned to our conversation.
“Imagine how I feel.” I shrugged and drained my glass. “It’s been so long since I’ve been out, I barely know how to act.”
“Okay, so when do you get another pass?” Natasha asked.
“Actually, if the hag confirms she got the paperwork, I may be able to make it for an event that’s happening at the club,” I said.
“Uh, will there be any players there?” Vanessa asked.
“Girl, yes. It’s something about a show Sasha is doing, so knowing her, the place will be wall-to-wall with sports celebs,” I said. The truth was I didn’t really know if that was the case, but if I had to spend time at the Football Widows Social Club, I might as well be able to invite my girls to hang, too.
“And it’s cool if we come by?” Natasha asked.
“I don’t see why not,” I said.
“Okay, well, text and let us know the details.”
We wrapped up happy hour, which really had been happy, and I agreed to text everyone to confirm that I’d be able to go back to the club for the event.
